Nassar Notes and Great Article Read!

Welcome back!
This post goes through and highlights one of the biggest scandals in sports history and there's also a great article attached to it.
-Hope you learn something new!

Larry Nassar was the USA Gymnastics national team doctor as well as a team physician at Michigan State University. He was accused of molesting at least 250 girls and young women. He pleaded guilty to at least ten of the 250 accusations. Late last month, he was sentenced to 40-175 years in a Michigan state prison.

This scandal broke after an article by the IndyStar was published back in 2016. Rachael Denhollander was the first to speak out and talk to the IndyStar.

Sitting through Statements

Nassar's hearing in Lansing, Michigan, lasted seven days and Judge Rosemarie Aquilina, allowed for any of the survivors to give their statements in the court room. Over 150 women or their advocates stepped up and spoke to the courtroom, judge and Nassar himself. After every statement was read, Aquilina spoke to every survivor and thanked each and every one of them for speaking out.

The final day of the trial ended with Rachael Denhollander who was the first to file a criminal complaint. Before Aquilina sentenced Nassar she read his letter of "apology" to everyone out loud. After hearing Nassar's "excuses" she did something that not many have witnessed in a courtroom:

Olympians Speaking Out

Olympians Aly Raisman, Simone Biles, Jordyn Wieber and Mckayla Maroney were some of the more high profile athletes that spoke out against Nassar.

Although Biles did not read her statement out loud at the trial, she had a great presence on social media, both during and after the trial.

Raisman's Statement

Aly Raisman has been one of the most powerful voices in this entire scandal. She doesn't just blame Nassar for everything, she also constantly talks about the system that has ultimately failed so many.
