Hello everyone! Today I got to see what a day in the life of a Gator baseball player is like.  -Hope you enjoy learning about a new athlete and sport! Nelson Maldonado - Baseball  Nelson is a junior on the UF Baseball team and has consistently been named a starter as Designated Hitter this past season. This past summer, Maldonado went through labrum repair surgery in his shoulder so he has still been a little bit limited. During his freshman and sophomore season with the Gators he played a lot in the outfield. He currently has a .289 batting average. It is still early in the season and Maldonado is looking to get in the groove of things again. Find out what a day after a game is like for Maldonado.  Wednesday's with Maldonado 8:15 a.m. Wake up and head to the weight room. 8:30-9:30 a.m. Weight room workout with some other teammates.  9:45 a.m. Grabs a recovery shake and some breakfast before heading to class.  10:30- noon...

Mental Health in NCAA Athletes

Image
The Pressure on NCAA Athletes  Since the beginning of my blog, I have outlined just how hectic an NCAA student-athlete's life can be on a day-to-day basis. This article dives into a personal story of an athlete at the University of Michigan.  Mental health has always been a topic that many people want to brush under the rug but as of recently, it seems it has come up more often. Many people don't even notice that they may have a mental health problem. This article goes into great detail on some of the statistics associated with mental health in student-athletes specifically.  It's worth your time, hey maybe you could help someone going through this! Abby Howell- UF Diving

Hello everyone! This week I got to see what a day in the life of a UF Diver looks like.  -Hope you enjoy learning about a new athlete and sport! Abby Howell- Diving  Abby is a junior on the UF Diving team and she has had somewhat of a different season this year. A few days before her second meet of the season she injured her shoulder pretty badly. Howell has experienced shoulder injuries before so once it happened she immediately knew what it was. Luckily, her injury came at the very beginning of the season and she was able to take a red shirt year because of it. This is how Howell goes through a typical Tuesday. Tuesday's with Howell 7:00 a.m. Wake up, grab a banana with some peanut butter and head to dry land practice in the UF Gymnastics facility.  *Dry land practice for divers is practicing their dives and flips on trampolines, tumbl traks, and soft mats into the pit.  8:15 a.m. Finish dry land and head to class. 8:30-10:25 a.m....

Worth The Read

Should NCAA Student Athletes Get Paid? This question has come up a lot in the media recently. I personally believe there are great arguments on both ends of the spectrum.  Katie Ledecky was a standout swimmer at the 2016 Summer Olympics and she continued her successes in college at Stanford University. She announced last month that she has decided to become a professional athlete leaving her unable to compete as an NCAA athlete.  This article is worth the read, hope it gives you some insight and maybe you'll learn a thing or two!
